What Is Diamond Cut?

Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. It is different from shapes such as round, oval, or emerald. Cut describes proportion, symmetry, and polish. These elements determine how a diamond sparkles.

A masterfully cut diamond reflects light internally and externally, showing brilliance which is white light, fire which is rainbow flashes, and scintillation which sparkles as the diamond moves.

This interplay creates the dazzling effect that makes cut the most important of the 4Cs.

Why Cut Matters Most

A poorly cut diamond, even with excellent color and clarity, can appear dull.

A perfectly cut diamond, regardless of size, draws the eye with unmistakable sparkle. At ANANTA, we place unmatched importance on cut quality. It is not only how a diamond looks. It is how it lives, how it feels, and how it holds your story in light.

How Cut Is Graded

International grading labs like GIA and HRD evaluate diamond cuts based on three key pillars:

  • Appearance: Brilliance, fire, and scintillation

  • Design: Proportion and light performance

  • Craftsmanship: Polish and symmetry

The cut grades range from:

Excellent

Ideal proportions. Exceptional brilliance. Timeless beauty.

This is the highest grade a diamond can receive. An Excellent cut diamond is proportioned to maximize light return, delivering an extraordinary display of brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Every facet works in harmony, creating a sparkle that feels both effortless and unforgettable.

At ANANTA, we only select diamonds that achieve Triple Excellent for round diamonds: top marks in cut, polish, and symmetry.

Very Good

Beautiful, but with subtle compromises

A Very Good cut still offers impressive brilliance and can appear nearly identical to an Excellent cut to the untrained eye. However, it may have slightly less balanced proportions or minor variances in symmetry and polish, which can subtly affect sparkle.

Good

Noticeably less brilliance under closer inspection

Diamonds graded as Good may still reflect a decent amount of light, but compromises in proportion or finish begin to show. These diamonds may have slightly shallow or deep cuts that reduce light performance: leading to less fire and overall radiance.

Fair

Low light return, muted sparkle

Diamonds in this category lack the proportions necessary to reflect light well. They may appear dull, lifeless, or flat: especially when compared side-by-side with higher grades. The emotional impact is greatly diminished.

Poor

Limited brilliance. Often visibly unbalanced.

A Poor cut fails to reflect light effectively, resulting in very little sparkle. Diamonds in this range may appear dark or “glassy.” They are rarely offered by reputable jewelers and never by ANANTA.

Cut Characteristics

To understand how cut affects beauty, consider the main structural elements of a diamond:

  • Table: The flat top surface of the diamond

  • Crown: The top angle above the girdle

  • Girdle: The widest point of the diamond

  • Pavilion: The angled area below the girdle

  • Culet: The small point at the bottom

  • Depth: The total height of the diamond

The harmony of these dimensions determines how beautifully a diamond returns light to the eye.

Cut-Driven Sparkle

  • Brilliance: The return of white light

  • Fire: The dispersion of light into rainbow colors

  • Scintillation: The flashes of sparkle as the diamond moves

A well-cut diamond combines all three for a radiant, unforgettable effect.

Hearts & Arrows: Where Precision Meets Emotion

When a diamond is cut to precise proportions, a pattern of eight hearts and eight arrows appears under magnification. This is a hallmark of masterful craftsmanship in which symmetry and light align to create unmatched brilliance.

At ANANTA, we offer only true Hearts & Arrows diamonds, selected for optical perfection by proportion and by visual clarity. Beauty lives in details you can feel.
