The less color a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it is. The most exceptional diamonds are completely colorless: pure, icy, and filled with light. Those with slight tints (often yellow or brown) are considered lower on the scale but may still appear visually appealing depending on how they are set and what matters most to you.
Understanding the GIA Diamond Color Scale
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed the internationally recognized color scale, grading diamonds from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable color). The closer to D, the whiter and rarer the diamond.
Colorless Range – D to F
- D – Absolutely colorless. The highest possible grade and incredibly rare.
- E – Colorless to the eye; even experts may struggle to distinguish from D.
- F – Technically colorless; any warmth is only visible when viewed upside down under controlled conditions.

Near Colorless Range – G to J
